Thing a Day: Correspondence From Hell

Katrina and I wrote this one together

Today’s exercise was poorly worded, but as near as we can figure, it was to write about receiving a postcard from someone really annoying that starts with “the postcard arrived…”

The postcard arrived at dusk which is itself unusual because the rest of the mail arrived shortly after noon. I heard someone slip it under the door and I hurried to see who it was, but they were gone. The card was warm to the touch and browning at the edges, the same as all those that had come before it. I still hadn’t figured out who was delivering them, but they were all postmarked “Dis” and, though they were unsigned, they were written in the same undisciplined hand so I put this one in the shoebox with the others.

I don’t know what’s happening. I woke up and the only things in the room were a pen and this postcard, pre-addressed to you. Hope you’re doing well in the new job, all the best,

Strange sense of déjà vu. I woke up and the only things in the room were a pen and this postcard, pre-addressed to you. Hope you’re doing well in the new job. Happy St. Patrick’s Day,

Hello! I woke up and the only things in the room were a pen and this post-card with your address. I must have fallen asleep while writing to you. Hope you’re doing well in the new job,

Hello there, my watch says that it’s St. Patrick’s Day, but I’ve got some stubble on my cheeks and I know I shaved this morning. Don’t know what to make of that, but since I’ve got this postcard here that was addressed to you, I thought I’d check in about how the new job is going. All the best,

-Jim

-Jim

I’m sure this is something I’ve done before. Things are very strange here. I wish you well in your new job, but I won’t be sending any more postcards.

All the best,

-Jim

And that’s what most of the cards are like. I’ve got hundreds of them.
