Get Your Ass To Mars

I don’t know why, but this just popped into my head and I figured I’d make a calligraphy piece. It’s in blackletter textura quadrata. I didn’t do anything particularly clever with it, though I like the implied link between the T and the Y and, obviously, “Mars” is in red because it’s, duh, the red planet. I put it in my etsy store which you can get to by clicking here

Tangled

I just saw Tangled for the first time and while I absolutely found it to be sweet and enjoyable, I also found myself thinking that now would be a good time to tell people about the original story since Disney traditionally deviates substantially from the original tales and, sticklers for tradition that they are, Tangled was no exception. So, I’m working out a rough script to make tomorrow’s Teaching Tuesday video and I don’t want to give everything away in print here, but, I will tell you, as a teaser, that Rapunzel was named for a breed of radish.

Caliginous

Hey, Chris, here’s another in this series of words that I think people should use more often. Now, what I think is cool about “caliginous” is that nothing in the world is physically dim, dark, murky, and obscure so this word can only correctly be used in a figurative sense. Referring to a state of mind or feelings about an idea. I think that’s neat.

Gimlet

Hey, Chris, my friend Erin mentioned how interesting the word “gimlet” is and, since we mostly know it as a drink with vodka or gin and lime juice, I thought it was a good idea to do.

Silence, varlet!

Silence, varlet!

OK, Chris, I’ve decided that I want to start, like… a thing. I’m sick of Helvetica (not really actually sick of Helvetica, but sick of it as a meme, which it has totally become) but I really enjoy how well it compacts, so I’m using Neuland which will serve the same function. But, yes, the thing which I’d like to start! I love words and some of them are just fun, so, I’m going to start posting… these things with words I like. [edit] After playing around with a bunch of fonts, I decided that I’d rather use Impact. Actually, [...]

I want you to paint me

Hey, Chris, I was at a wedding this past weekend in Maine at the Stone Mountain Arts Center (SMAC) and while it was totally awesome, there was this gnome on the bar and my very first thought was to make this. So I did.

Call No Man Happy

Hey, Chris, I made this last night. It only took me 15 minutes to write it, but the ink took 30 minutes to dry because it’s been so humid. I was noting that while it is from Herodotus, I think a lot of people probably know it from “American Gods.” Anyways, I put it in my store.

the Good Service Distraction Co.

So, Chris, I don’t know when we’re going to actually do this but I’d like it to be soon. It’s hard to work on things together lately since we’ve both been working so much and at different times of the day. I’d like to think that you are creating things in my absence so when we finally do sit down, we’ll be able to cobble something together. Anyway, I designed this as our cover. I don’t know if it will stay our cover for always, but I like it and I’m proud of it. I may come back to this [...]

Humor

Lately I’ve been thinking about the subject humor. I mean I know it’s not a complete surprise since you and I spend much of our time laughing at nonsense and quoting our favorite comedians and movies. Not only that it is something that we spend most of our creative energy constructing things that are not only entertaining but make people laugh. We both share the absolute need to entertain and bring enjoyment to those around us and anyone else for that matter. We express this need in our own unique ways and use our talents towards this singular goal. For [...]

Thing a Day – Terrible Twos

OK, so, the writing exercise Kat and I did today says “you are two years old. Write from this perspective. Be childlike. PLAY!” I confess that I couldn’t figure how a two year-old would answer the questions about themselves, so I couldn’t really take it seriously, but when it came time to actually write from the perspective of a two year-old, I realized, that’s the very beginning of an external awareness, so, everything has to be this bizarre Joyceian stream of consciousness that doesn’t allow for and internal or external world, it’s all equally real, it’s just this jumble of your entire world, [...]

Thing a Day: Correspondence From Hell

Katrina and I wrote this one together Today’s exercise was poorly worded, but as near as we can figure, it was to write about receiving a postcard from someone really annoying that starts with “the postcard arrived…”   The postcard arrived at dusk which is itself unusual because the rest of the mail arrived shortly after noon. I heard someone slip it under the door and I hurried to see who it was, but they were gone. The card was warm to the touch and browning at the edges, the same as all those that had come before it. I [...]
